Serapool’s Porcelain Tiles offer more than just a surface finish—they reflect an architectural vision. In this interview with architect Hazal Yalçın Esgün, the role of material selection in pool design is explored through the lens of visual coherence, functional needs, and architectural integrity. Her professional perspective demonstrates how Serapool shapes the sector by blending aesthetics with technical excellence.
Swimming pools are not just aesthetic features; they add functional value and visual coherence to the entire space. When integrated into the landscape, pools become focal points that elevate outdoor living. One of the key elements ensuring this harmony is high-quality material selection.
How do you evaluate the architectural impact of swimming pools? In your opinion, what kind of value do pools add to a design?
I believe the value pools add to architecture is significant. Today, architecture must enhance its surroundings—there’s no room for exceptions. As long as you work with the right professionals, pools become complementary features that enhance both function and beauty. When integrated with the landscape, pools add depth and visual appeal to the space. That’s why material selection is so important.
Durability, visual appeal, and technological compatibility are critical for the longevity of architectural projects. Serapool products offer both technical performance and aesthetic diversity, thanks to their Chemical Resistance and wide range of design options.
What are your priorities in terms of technology, material, and innovation? How has Serapool supported you in these areas?
We approach each project with great attention to detail. For us, material selection is everything. Our confidence stems from making the right material choices. We closely follow trends and technologies, and Serapool has become our go-to collaborator. Serapool not only defines the visual tone of our pools, but its complementary products are just as excellent as the Porcelain Tiles. The first product I recommend to clients is porcelain. Why? It’s resistant to chemicals, visually striking, adds depth and beauty to the space, and above all, the quality is unmatched. These are the main reasons we work with Serapool Porcelain—and as long as we build pools, they’ll remain part of our team.
The Blue Bead product from the Natural Series surpasses classic blue tiles with its nine distinct textures. This multilayered surface creates a natural depth, completing the pool’s aesthetic atmosphere. Blue Bead is not just a surface material—it’s a design element that defines character.
You used the Blue Bead product from Serapool’s Natural Series in your Kemer Country project. What factors influenced this choice?
From the beginning, porcelain was our first choice. Since the area was larger than a typical villa, we had to maximize its potential—and the pool had to be the star of the garden. We considered all tile options within the Natural Series. We found the harmony of blue and green to be ideal for the setting. Blue Bead added a unique flair with its nine different faces, setting it apart from ordinary blue tiles. We chose it for its aesthetic, its harmony with the surroundings, its quality, and its resistance to salt and chemicals.
For architects, a project is more than a technical task—it’s a creative journey they embrace. This emotional connection enhances attention to detail and enriches the user experience. For long-established firms, such commitment is a driving force behind consistent success.
Do architects form emotional connections with the projects and materials they use? What do you feel when starting a new project?
As part of Atol Havuz, I can say we establish deep bonds with every project we undertake. This emotional connection is what makes the work meaningful. I believe this is why Ahmet Bey has been a leader in the field for so many years. With every new project, we get excited and aim to make it one of our best. That excitement leads to success.
A well-designed pool is not only about the main tiles—it’s also about complementary details. Functional elements like Inner Trim, Outer Trim, and Porcelain Stoneware Grating contribute to a complete and refined design.
Which Serapool products are indispensable in your projects, and why?
I don’t think we could do without the Natural Series. And when it comes to complements, the pool grates, Scoth Inner Corner, and Scoth Outer Corner are essentials. They all work together perfectly and are built to last for many years.
An outstanding pool design requires thorough analysis, material expertise, the right team, and precise execution. When these elements align, the result is a visually striking, long-lasting, and technically sound structure.
How would you define the perfect swimming pool? What are your criteria for this perfection?
All the pools we build are perfect in our eyes. That’s because we start every project with the right team, the right knowledge, and the right materials. When everything aligns, the result is outstanding. If you love what you do, every project becomes exceptional. From a broader perspective, perfection means analyzing the space correctly, designing based on client needs, using quality craftsmanship and materials—and enjoying the view when it’s done.
