What is Winter Maintenance in Pools?

Serapool Porselen

Some maintenance is carried out to prepare the indoor and outdoor swimming pools that are not used in winter. Waiting times in the pools vary according to climatic conditions and temperature. Pool winter maintenance is recommended so that installations such as electricity, water, and pool coatings can be used without any problems in other seasons without the need for modification. Winter maintenance in pools directly affects the lifetime of the pools. In pools that are not maintained in winter, cracks and breakage may occur in the coatings due to low temperatures (-30). While this causes water leaks, it also causes a high repair cost. For more detailed information about the general maintenance and cleaning processes of pools, you can visit the "How to Maintain and Clean the Pool?"  page.

How to Do Winter Maintenance in Pools?

Winter maintenance steps in swimming pools:

  • The pool water level should be reduced by 15 cm for skimmer pools and 30 cm for overflow pools.
  • The pH value of the pool water should be fixed at 7.0.
  • Pool winter maintenance chemicals should be added in required amounts according to the volume of pool water.
  • At least 6 hours of water circulation should be done.
  • It is necessary to repeat the processes up to this point every 15 days during the winter season.
  • After the application, all inlet-outlet valves and pool pump should be closed.
  • Any remaining water in the engine compartment and filter system must be drained.
  • Floating ice should be added to the edge of the pool.

1-How to Do Winter Maintenance in Outdoor Pools?

Winter maintenance in outdoor pools is not a difficult application. Necessary maintenance chemicals should be supplied and added to the pool water, the remaining water in the pool equipment should be drained and the process mentioned after the circulation step should be repeated with an interval of 15 days - 30 days. Preparing outdoor pools for very hot and very cold weather conditions affects the usage times of the pools. The better the pool is cared for during seasonal changes, the longer and more comfortable it can be used.

Are Outdoor Pools Empty in Winter?

Outdoor pools should not be drained in winter. When there is no water in the pool reservoir, the coatings crack and break at low temperatures. Joint applications will be damaged as long as there is no water in heat and water installations. The water in the pool is properly maintained by adding certain chemicals. In order for the outdoor pools to be used in a well-kept and healthy manner in the following seasons, the pool water is not drained during the winter season.

2-How to Maintain the Indoor Pool in Winter?

Winter maintenance in indoor swimming pools is similar to the maintenance process in outdoor swimming pools. A certain amount of water is discharged according to the water volume of the indoor swimming pool. The pH level of the water is balanced at 7.0. Then the necessary winter care chemicals are added to the pool water. Pool water circulation is operated for at least 6 hours. Indoor pools must be well ventilated while performing all these operations. During the winter season, the mentioned application should be repeated at 15 or 30 day intervals. Apart from this application, unlike outdoor pools, the pool water should be completely drained and cleaned at least 2 times during the winter season and the same procedures should be performed again. In addition, the cleaning of equipment such as pool pump and pool valves should be repeated at the times of draining and cleaning the water of each pool.

What Should Be Considered While Doing Winter Maintenance in Pools?

Things to consider when doing winter maintenance in pools:

  • Care should be taken not to skip the renewal periods of winter care chemicals and to perform maintenance at the recommended times.
  • If there is water in all equipment and installations in the pool, it should be completely emptied. Otherwise, the pool mechanisms may be damaged in frost events.
  • After all winter maintenance operations are completed, the addition of floating ice should not be neglected. These ice blocks act as a barrier, preventing the pool from deforming at very low temperatures.
  • It is not correct to add more or less winter care chemicals than the recommended amount. It should be added in appropriate amounts according to the volume of water.

Why is Winter Maintenance Important in Pools?

Winter maintenance allows us to prepare the pools for the next season in a way that does not create maintenance and repair costs. Covering materials such as glass mosaics, ceramics and tiles are produced according to a certain cold and temperature. For this reason, it is necessary to protect the materials and the pool. Along with these, winter maintenance protects the pools from the formation of algae and bacteria during the winter season. It provides a cleaner and more hygienic use.

What Happens If The Pools Are Not Maintained In The Winter?

If winter maintenance is not done in the pools, various malfunctions and problems may occur in the coming seasons. Cold weather conditions, which pose a problem for both the installation and the pool flooring, may require costly repairs. Pool floors suffer structural deterioration at both low temperature and very high temperature. Pool coatings, which can be subject to deformations such as breakage and cracking, can cause not only the change of places of deterioration, but also the change of all floor or wall coverings. In addition, the grouting sections are also damaged, causing water leaks. Pools that are not maintained in the winter can cause a new renovation cost every season, and you can lose your pool pleasure. The service life of the pools also decreases after each renovation process.

Does Pool Water Freeze in Winter?

When winter care chemicals and floating ice blocks, which are a barrier, are not used, the pool water freezes in climatic conditions falling to minus temperature. Freezing of pool water causes serious damage to pool coatings and renders them unusable. In addition, the water and heat systems are also greatly affected. In order to keep the pool water from freezing even at very low temperatures, winter maintenance must be done correctly and on time.

What is Winter Care Chemical?

The pool material, which consists of suitable materials to protect swimming pools at temperatures below seasonal normals, is called winter care chemical. Concentrated winter care chemicals provide healthy protection of pools at low temperatures.

What are the Properties of Winter Care Chemical?

Features of winter care chemical:

  • It prevents the formation of algae, bacteria and lime in pools.
  • Protects pool equipment (such as filters) and installations (water, heat).
  • There is no phosphate in winter care chemicals.
  • There are many sizes available for sale. A sufficient amount of winter care chemicals can be preferred according to the size of the pool.
  • Winter care chemical is available in both tablet and liquid form.

What Does a Winter Care Chemical Do?

The winter maintenance chemical ensures that the pools are protected in frost and at very low temperatures without losing their form. The pH value of the pool water is adjusted, the required amount of pool chemicals are added, the installations, filter, pool pump and valves are emptied and cleaned so that there is no water left, and the pool is prepared for winter by adding floating ice molds. Pool chemicals prevent the deformation of pool coatings, which are used in pools and have a delicate structure. In pools that are not prepared for the winter season with pool chemicals, problems that will require various modifications may occur.

How to Use Winter Care Chemical?

The extent to which the winter care chemical will be used depends on the volume of the pool water. For 100 m³ pool water, 15-20 liters of winter care chemicals should be added together with 2-3 kg of chlorine granules. Winter care chemical in tablet form should be added as 4 capsules for 100 m³ pool water. Capsules should be renewed throughout the season. Using the winter care chemical less than the pool water volume cannot protect the pool at low temperatures. Similarly, the winter care chemical added in excess will damage the pool instead of protecting it. For this reason, an appropriate amount of addition should be made according to the amount of pool water.
